Peter Schlör’s large-format photographs impressively demonstrate that the image of a landscape is shaped not only by the materiality, structure and configuration of its natural forms but also principally by light. Since the invention of the daguerreotype in the 1830s, light has also been the prerequisite for the creation of a photographic image: in 19th-century photogravures, it would be literally true to talk in terms of ‘drawing with light’. Using the technical means now available in the 21st century, Peter Schlör has investigated the tremendous shaping and ‘graphic’ effects of natural light in his latest works comprising landscapes photographed on the Canary Islands, in Cappadocia (Central Anatolia) and on Iceland. Schlör has now been honing his remarkable sensibility to natural light for more than two decades.
